Time Sound: Memories in Albina
Directed by Tahirah Memory
DJ Jumbo
Time Sound: Memories in Albina is a reflection on music and place, directed by Tahirah Memory. The concert is grounded in the work of Tahirah's late father, Grammy-winning trumpeter, composer, and educator, Thara Memory. Dating back to the late 1960s, the Memory family’s music reflects life in Portland's historic Albina neighborhoods — centering Black Portland's musical heritage through an evolving family songbook.
Drawing from Albina Music Trust’s community archive alongside Tahirah’s original compositions, this performance traces one family's enduring musical history. Blending jazz, rhythm and blues, orchestral music, and soul, the concert features a dynamic ensemble of regional musicians including Tyrone Hendrix, Nick Rolfe, Farnell Newton, Damian Erskine, DJ Jumbo, and special guests.
Rooted in the work of Albina’s musical elders and carried forward through new voices, Memories in Albina continues the Time Sound tradition through this singular, one-time performance.
Presented by Albina Music Trust & KMHD. Sponsored by Travel Portland and The Old Church Concert Hall.
