Albina Music Trust’s projects preserve stories, connect communities, and shape the future of Black music in Portland, Oregon.
Preserving Black music, FOR THE FUTURE.
Our Projects
participating in Albina’s musical legacy.
Each of our projects activates our community archive—through walking, listening, gathering, broadcasting, and remembering. Together, these projects ensure Albina’s Black musical legacy is not only protected, but experienced.
Albina Soul Walk Tour
The Albina Soul Walk is a self-guided audio walking tour that traces Albina’s historic Black music culture through the neighborhood where it lived. Using oral histories, archival recordings, and site-specific storytelling, Soul Walk invites participants to listen where the music once played—connecting sound to streets, venues, and community hubs.
Wall To Wall Soul
at the old church
Wall To Wall Soul at The Old Church is a pop-up exhibit that brings Albina’s historic musicians into a new public space. Featuring curated portraits from the Albina Community Archive, this version of the exhibit introduces audiences to artists whose influence shaped Portland’s sound but was often undocumented.
By placing these faces and stories on the wall, the exhibit restores visibility—and invites deeper engagement with Albina’s cultural history. On display February 2nd - March 27th in 2026.
Wall To Wall Soul
At Clydes Prime Rib
Wall To Wall Soul at Clyde’s Prime Rib is a permanent exhibition honoring Albina’s historic Black musicians. Installed within one of Portland’s last remaining venues that regularly hosts Albina’s elder musicians, the exhibit pairs archival photography with an active, intergenerational performance space. Here, history doesn’t sit still—it shares the room with live music, conversation, and community.
The Archive Radio
The Archive is Albina Music Trust’s radio program, airing on KMHD 89.1FM. Each episode draws from the Albina Community Archive to share historic recordings, overlooked artists, and the deeper context surrounding Albina’s musical ecosystem.
The show extends preservation beyond exhibitions and events—bringing Albina’s sound into homes, cars, and daily life.
Soul Conversation
Soul Conversation is a public dialogue series featuring Albina’s music legends in conversation. These gatherings center lived experience and reflection—highlighting the role musicians played as anchors of Albina’s historic Black community.
Presented alongside archival photography, Soul Conversation honors Albina’s legacy with a nod to the future of Black Portland.
Time Sound
Originally formed in 1981 and revived in 2022, Time Sound is a concert series that brings together elder musicians and emerging Black Portland artists in public spaces throughout Portland, Oregon. Performed in a variety of configurations including jazz big band, mass choir, and R&B ensembles, Time Sound has linked generations of Black Oregonians. It’s a reminder that Albina’s music has always been collaborative—and still is.
These Projects Do One Thing
They make sure Albina’s Black music legacy is preserved not as nostalgia—but as a living resource.
