What is Time Sound?

Originally formed in 1981, Time Sound celebrates Black musical excellence through live performance, collaboration, and community gathering.

In 1981, Albina’s musicians assembled Time Sound as a concert series that showcased the depth of Black musical talent in a jazz big band setting. Throughout the 1980s, the program appeared in concert halls, institutions, and venues across Oregon—bringing together musicians whose work spanned genres, decades, and communities. In 2022, Albina Music Trust revived Time Sound, reconnecting elder musicians with emerging Black Portland artists. Since its return, the series has created new intergenerational bonds through performances in public spaces and cultural landmarks—ensuring Albina’s legacy continues to be heard, shared, and lived.
