We are celebrating 45 years of the Time Sound Big Band at Washington Park. This historic event showcases generations of our musical community on stage together for the first time in many years.
Albina’s musicians assembled Time Sound in 1981 to honor Portland’s legacy of Black musical excellence. With a range of influences—from African drumbeats to Tchaikovsky—the program exposed audiences to a variety of musical traditions.
In the decades to follow, this work developed into youth music academies promoting jazz music education. These programs appeared in schools, concert halls, and institutions throughout the Northwest.
In recent years, Albina Music Trust has revived Time Sound to reconnect elder musicians with emerging artists and youth in our region.
Join us as we ensure that Albina’s musical legacy lives on.
